Lohashilpa/Wrought Iron Craft

Lohashilpa/wrought iron craft of Chhattisgarh has its roots in the ironsmith community of the region. Occupation of the peoples of these community was to make farming and hunting implements for other tribes. Over the time, the artisans have beautifully evolved their craft into an artform. Lohashilpa/wrought iron craft has a worldwide demand. Many accomplished Lohashilpa/wrought iron craft artists are mainly clustered in Bastar district of Chattisgarh with Kondagaon, Umargaon, and Gunagaon being the main centers. These artists create wrought iron lamps (Diya) decorated it with animal motifs, figurines of Budha Dev riding a horse. 

Members of the Gond and Muria/Maria community are the main practitioners of this crafts.  As their Lohashilpa/wrought iron craft evolved with time, their work also got noticed throughout the world. It resulted in further experimentation with the traditional forms and sizes. The art is acknowledged and protected under geographical indication (GI) of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement. Lohashilpa/wrought iron craft/Bastar Iron Craft is listed as item 82 under the GI Act 1999 of the Government of India.
