Traditional Fabrics

Traditional fabrics of Chhattisgarh include the famous Kosa silk, cotton fabrics, and the lesser-known textile crafts aal (Morinda citrifolia) dyed handloom fabrics.
Kosa silk, a variety of Tussar silk is drawn out of cocoons of the Indian silkworm Antheraea mylitta. This dull, golden brownish silk is world famous for its toughness and soft texture. Two places of Chhattisgarh namely Korba and Champa, are famous for producing this fine quality of pure silk. It fetches high revenue for is producers.
Aal-dyed fabrics are utilised mostly as a sari-like drape (pata) by the tribal women and as a turban (pheta) or a shoulder cloth (angoccha) by tribal men. The existence of this textile was known from 16th century onwards. Tokapal, Nagarnar and Kondagaon areas of Chhattisgarh still produces aal-dyed fabrics. Three weaver’s communities namely the Pankas, the Chandhars, and the Mahars, are associated with the weaving of these traditional fabrics.
