WoodCarvings

WoodCarvings3.png
Wood carving craft of Chhattisgarh is an age-old tradition of Chhattisgarh. The craft is GI protected. Life-size figurines of animals, folk gods, goddesses and humans are made. Many artisans involved in this art for generations are clustered mainly in Raigarh and Sarguja regions of Chhattisgarh. Beautifully carved ritual wooden objects are found in houses of these artists. Ornamented wooden imitations of axes, battle axes and spears are held by artists during the ritual dance performances. The designs are carved by using a red-hot iron knife or a nail. It burns the wood and thereby leaves a linear grooved impression on the motifs. Mainly used motifs are geometric patterns, snakes, the sun and moon.
